The 2024 BMW X3 is available in three trim levels: rear-wheel-drive sDrive30i, all-wheel-drive xDrive30i, and M40i. A high-performance BMW X3 M version is covered in a separate review. The M40i is the popular trim, but we prefer the xDrive30i. We’ll explain why below.

sDrive30i

The BMW X3 sDrive30i starts at $47,895 (including a $995 destination fee) and comes standard with 19-inch wheels, a power liftgate, auto-dimming mirrors, synthetic leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, and ambient interior lighting. In-car tech includes a 10.25-inch infotainment display, navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12-speaker audio system, satellite radio, two USB ports, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Additional safety features include automatic emergency braking, blind-spot and lane-departure warnings, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high beams.

The 30i offers multiple options, including the Convenience package, which adds a panoramic sunroof, keyless entry, and adjustable lumbar support for the driver’s seat. The Premium package builds on those features with heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a head-up display, and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen.

The Dynamic Handling package adds athleticism with an adaptive suspension, sport-tuned steering, and upgraded M Sport brakes with blue or red calipers. It’s a nice way to get some of the top-trim M40i’s performance profile without the larger engine or larger price.

For extra safety features, the Driving Assistance Professional package adds adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and low-speed automated steering (up to 40 mph) to help ease fatigue in traffic congestion. Evasive steering assist and cross-traffic alerts are also included. When you reach your destination, the Parking Assistance package proves handy with its surround-view camera and automated parking system.

Most of the Convenience and Premium features are available as stand-alone options, as are 20- and 21-inch wheels, leather upholstery, remote engine start, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, head-up display, wireless charging tray, and a premium 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

xDrive30i

Priced at $49,895, the all-wheel-drive version of the X3 30i is our preferred model. It gets the same long list of standard features as the rear-wheel-drive sDrive30i, but we think most buyers will benefit from the addition of all-wheel drive for just $2,000 more.

M40i

The M40i starts at $62,895. Besides having a more powerful six-cylinder engine and all-wheel-drive, it builds on the 30i and comes with the Convenience and Dynamic Handling package features, different wheel design, adaptive headlights, a synthetic leather-wrapped dashboard, and 12.3-inch infotainment display. The 30i’s options are also available for M40i.

Although the M40i’s six-cylinder power and extra features are tempting, they come at a hefty premium. We like the 30i for its ample features, available options, lively handling, and reasonable starting price for a small, sporty luxury SUV.
