Manchester United are not only drinking in the last chance Champions League saloon but they are also approaching last orders.

The Reds welcome German giants Bayern Munich to Old Trafford on Tuesday night with their hopes of reaching the knockout stages hanging by a thread. There is also the real possibility that Erik ten Hag’s side could be eliminated from Europe altogether and miss out on the fallback of Europa League football.

United have been their own worst enemy in Europe this season, throwing away leads to lose to FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray and then twice surrendering a two-goal lead to draw 3-3 with the latter in Turkey last time out. Those three teams are battling to join Bayern in the last 16 with the German giants having cantered to top spot with 13 points from 15. We take a look at the scenarios for United on Tuesday night.

If Manchester United win

A victory raises the prospect of qualification but only if Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen draw in Denmark. That would propel the Reds into the knockout places in second spot with the Danes dropping into the Europa League. If there is a winner in Scandinavia then the Reds will be playing Europa League football in the new year.

If Manchester United draw

If United draw with Thomas Tuchel’s side, a draw in the other group fixture will eliminate them from Europe, as will a Copenhagen win which would see Galatasaray into the Europa League on their head-to-head record against United.

A Galatasaray victory in Denmark would see United into the Europa League thanks to the Reds’ superior head-to-head record against Copenhagen. Both teams would end on five points but United would progress having scored more goals away from home in the matches between them.

If Manchester United lose

If United are beaten by Bayern they are out of Europe entirely. The Reds are bottom of the group and will stay there if they lose on Tuesday.
