Jets QB Aaron Rodgers agrees to reworked contract: What it means for New York

Aaron Rodgers has agreed to a reworked contract with the Jets, the quarterback said Wednesday after practice. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Rodgers’ new deal is for two years and worth $75 million guaranteed through the 2024 season, a league source confirmed to The Athletic.
  • Rodgers is saving the Jets around $35 million guaranteed, spreading the cap hit over five years.
  • The 39-year-old and the Jets agreed to rework the deal from the early days of the trade. Rodgers said the new deal would become official Thursday.

What it means

Recently, Jets coach Robert Saleh said he’d be surprised if Rodgers didn’t play with the Jets for more than one season, and Rodgers echoed that sentiment on Wednesday — both with this contract restructure and his comments.

“Definitely some of it is how much fun I’m having,” Rodgers said. “It’s all about the body and how the body feels. The team gave up significant pieces for it to just be a one-year deal. I’m aware of that. Now, I think anything can happen with my body or with the success we have this season. But I’m having a blast so I don’t see this as a one-year-and-done thing.”

When the official re-do of his contract — which was set for a $1.2 million cap hit in 2023 and $107.6 million in 2024 — is official, the idea is that it will be helpful for the Jets cap situation both now and in the future, and likely indicate even further that the expectation is that he’ll return in 2024. — Rosenblatt
