A look back at NFL Week 8

A look back at NFL Week 8

PITTSBURGH — Ben Roethlisberger won his 100th career game in grand fashion, setting team records with 522 passing yards and six touchdown tosses to guide the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 51-34 win over the Indianapolis Colts at Heinz Field on Sunday.

Roethlisberger completed a career-best 40 of 49 passes and his 522 passing yards was the fourth-highest total in NFL history. Andrew Luck of the Colts had 400 yards passing and three touchdowns.

Indianapolis, coming off of a shutout of the Cincinnati Bengals last week, made it a one-possession game, 42-34, with a pair of touchdowns 57 seconds apart to end the third quarter but the Steelers kept the accelerator to the floor.

The 51 points were the most scored by the Steelers (5-3) during coach Mike Tomlin’s eight seasons as coach. The AFC South-leading Colts (5-3) had their five-game winning streak snapped. The teams combined for 85 points, most in the NFL this season.

Roethlisberger, the first player in NFL history with multiple 500-yard passing games, had a 150.6 passer rating for the Steelers, who wore their black and gold bumblebee throwback jerseys.

Seahawks 13, Panthers 9

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Russell Wilson threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Luke Wilson for the game’s only touchdown with 47 seconds remaining as Seattle defeated Carolina.

The defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks (4-3), who snapped a two-game losing streak, were in danger of falling into their worst rut in more than two years.

The Seahawks drove 80 yards in nine plays, with Wilson accounting for 53 yards on 4-for-4 passing and adding 21 rushing yards on two carries. Seattle never led until the touchdown.

“It was big for us,” said Wilson, who ended up 20-for-32 for 199 passing yards. “I thought our defense was relentless. That’s what we talked about (Saturday) night, about being relentless.”

Carolina (3-4-1), which leads the NFC South, is in the midst of a three-game winless stretch.

Patriots 51, Bears 23

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Tom Brady, making his 100th regular-season start at home, threw five touchdown passes and New England rolled to its fourth straight victory with a shellacking of Chicago.

Brady went 30 of 35 for 354 yards in another brilliant performance, improved to 87-13 as a home starter. It was the third five-touchdown game of his career and he holds the club record with a pair of six-touchdown passes.

Three of Sunday’s touchdown passes went to Rob Gronkowski, who left the game after a 46-yard touchdown catch and run early in the third quarter with dehydration.

Brady is 100 of 144 for 1,268 yards, 14 touchdowns and no interceptions during New England’s winning streak with the Patriots (6-2) averaging almost 40 points per game during the run.

The Bears (3-5) lost for the fourth time in five games.

Cardinals 24, Eagles 20

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Quarterback Carson Palmer connected with rookie wide receiver John Brown for a 75-yard touchdown with 81 seconds left as Arizona held off Philadelphia.

The Cardinals improved to 6-1 — their best start to a season since going 7-0 in 1970.

Arizona’s defense set up the win by forcing the Eagles to settle for a field goal after Philadelphia had three chances to score while inside the Cardinals 10-yard line.

After Brown’s dramatic touchdown, the Eagles (5-2) still had one more shot. Quarterback Nick Foles moved them 64 yards during the final frantic minute. Foles had three chances from the 16-yard line to pull off a miraculous comeback, but it wasn’t to be.

Lions 22, Falcons 21

LONDON — Matt Prater hit a 48-yard field goal on the game’s last play and Detroit erased a 21-point halftime deficit to defeat Atlanta at Wembley Stadium.

Matthew Stafford passed for 325 yards and two touchdowns for the Lions (6-2). Stafford broke Bobby Layne’s franchise record of 118 touchdown passes with his 59-yard, third-quarter strike to Golden Tate, who caught seven passes for 151 yards.

Prater’s made field goal came after a delay-of-game penalty against Detroit nullified a missed 43-yard attempt.

Matt Ryan threw two first-quarter touchdown passes but Atlanta (2-6) lost for the fifth consecutive time.

The 9:30 a.m. ET start was the earliest in league history.

Chiefs 34, Rams 7

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Knile Davis returned the second-half kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown and Kansas City cruised to a victory over St. Louis.

The Chiefs, now 4-3 after opening the season with a pair of losses, trailed 7-0 after one quarter but scored 34 unanswered points including a pair of rushing touchdowns from Jamaal Charles, and sacked St. Louis’ Austin Davis seven times.

Kansas City’s Alex Smith completed 24 of 28 passes for 226 yards, connecting six times with Dwayne Bowe.

The Rams generated only 200 yards of offense, fell to 2-5 and were decimated by injuries.

Bills 43, Jets 23

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Kyle Orton threw four touchdown passes and Buffalo scored 13 points off six New York Jets’ turnovers.

Robert Woods, Sammy Watkins, Lee Smith and Scott Chandler all had a touchdown catch for the Buffalo (5-3), which won its second straight to reach the midway point of the season with a winning record for just the third time since 1999, the last time they made the playoffs.

New York (1-7) lost seven in a row, its longest losing streak since the 2005 squad dropped seven straight.

Percy Harvin, playing his first game for New York since being acquired from Seattle on Oct. 17, had three catches for 22 yards and four carries for 28 yards.

Orton was just 10 of 17 for 238 yards but avoided the types of mistakes that doomed New York counterparts Geno Smith and Michael Vick, each of whom accounted for three turnovers. Smith was benched for Vick after throwing interceptions on three straight series in the first quarter.

Bengals 27, Ravens 24

CINCINNATI — Andy Dalton’s 1-yard touchdown run with 57 seconds remaining lifted Cincinnati over Baltimore in an important AFC North clash.

Dalton passed for 266 yards with an interception and two rushing touchdowns for Cincinnati (4-2-1), which has defeated Baltimore in eight of their past 10 meetings.

After Baltimore rallied from an 11-point deficit to take a 24-20 lead with four minutes remaining, Mohamed Sanu’s 53-yard reception helped set up Dalton’s game-winner.

Joe Flacco was 17 of 34 for 195 yards and two interceptions and Lorenzo Taliaferro ran for two scores for Baltimore (5-3).

Dolphins 27, Jaguars 13

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Miami used two interception returns for touchdowns to power its way past Jacksonville.

Jacksonville held an advantage in total yards and time of possession, but the two key pick-six returns more than offset those two key categories. Jacksonville rookie Blake Bortles has now thrown 10 interceptions in the five games he has played. Four of the interceptions have been returned for touchdowns.

Louis Delmas for 81 yards and Brent Grimes for 22 scored on the interceptions for the Dolphins (4-3). Jacksonville dropped to 1-7.

Vikings 19, Buccaneers 13 (OT)

TAMPA, Fla. — Anthony Barr forced a fumble and returned it 27 yards for a game-winning touchdown in overtime as Minnesota beat Tampa Bay.

Teddy Bridgewater led the Vikings (3-5) on a nine-play, 61-yard drive to set up Blair Walsh’s game-tying 38-yard field goal as time expired in regulation.

Two minutes earlier, Mike Glennon connected with rookie Austin Seferian-Jenkins for a 7-yard touchdown pass that put Tampa Bay (1-6) ahead by three.

On the first play in overtime, Glennon completed a pass to Seferian-Jenkins for 10 yards. Barr knocked the ball loose, scooped it up and dashed into the end zone for the game-winning score.

Browns 23, Raiders 13

CLEVELAND — Quarterback Brian Hoyer tossed a 4-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Hawkins early in the fourth quarter to propel Cleveland over winless Oakland.

The Browns found their offense and a finishing kick in the fourth quarter to improve to 4-3.

Hoyer, who faced questions about his job security this week after a loss at previously winless Jacksonville on Oct. 19, finished 19 of 28 for 275 yards and no interceptions.

The Raiders (0-7) have lost 13 games in a row dating to 2013.

Texans 30, Titans 16

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Arian Foster rushed for 151 yards and scored three touchdowns as Houston ruined Tennessee’s Zach Mettenberger’s first NFL start.

Foster broke a 3-3 tie with six minutes left in the second quarter with a 34-yard scoring run, then added a 1-yard plunge with 5:42 remaining in the third quarter that finished a 98-yard drive and expanded Houston’s lead to 27-3.

Mettenberger threw his first NFL touchdown pass, a 6-yarder to Delanie Walker, with 2:12 left in the third, and added a 12-yard scoring strike to Justin Hunter with 56 seconds remaining in the game. Tennessee managed only 36 yards on the ground.

The Texans improved to 4-4, while Tennessee (2-6) lost for the sixth time in seven games.
