Kyle Allen’s start for Cam Newton reminds of 2012 NFL ad

Carolina Panthers quarterback Kyle Allen made quite the impression in his second NFL start.

In front of a familiar crowd at State Farm Stadium, the Scottsdale Desert Mountain High School product stepped in for starter Cam Newton and threw for 261 yards while completing 19-of-26 passes. Four went for touchdowns.

Aside from losing a strip-sack, the second-year pro not only protected the ball but made big plays in Carolina’s 38-20 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

As Newton continues to nurse a mid-foot sprain, Allen will be a starter so long as he’s healthy.

But when Newton is ready to play, there might be a quarterback controversy.

NFL fans saw enough out of Allen to consider that possibility.

It called back to a 2012 NFL “PLAY 60” commercial that features Newton and a younger football fan who wanted to take his job.

That wasn’t the only fun that Twitter had at Newton’s expense as Allen impressed throughout Sunday afternoon.

The memes were rolling in, from that time Newton got denied trying to pay his way into first class and beyond.

For what it’s worth, Newton posted in support of Allen to his Instagram story after the Panthers’ win over the Cardinals.
