Alia Bhatt

Background

Alia Bhatt is leaving her mark on Hindi-language cinema. Part of a Hindi film family, she’s continuing a legacy by becoming one of Bollywood’s biggest stars. Bhatt was born on March 15, 1993, in Mumbai, India. She is the daughter of Mahesh Bhatt and Soni Razdan, and she has a sister named Shaheen and two half-siblings named Pooja and Rahul. Her father is a director, her mother is an actress, and members of her extended family are involved in the industry. Because of that, Bhatt decided she wanted to be an actress from a young age, making her debut at just five years old. She even dropped out of school to pursue her dream.

In 2012, Bhatt landed her first leading role as a sophisticated teenage girl involved in a love triangle in the teen film “Student of the Year,” alongside Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan, which was a commercial success. In 2014, she got her second big role in the road film “Highway,” where she starred as a lonely teenage girl who develops Stockholm syndrome after being abducted. While it wasn’t as successful, it earned Bhatt a Filmfare Critics’ Award for ‘Best Actress’ and a nomination for a Filmfare Award for ‘Best Actress.’ That same year, she starred in the romantic films “2 States” and “Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania,” both of which were commercially successful. These accomplishments established Bhatt’s career as an actress. In 2015, she starred in the romantic comedy “Shaandaar,” which features Shahid Kapoor and her as insomniacs who fall in love during a destination wedding.

In 2016, Bhatt landed the part of a poor Bihari migrant in “Udta Punjab,” a crime drama about substance abuse from writer-director Abhishek Chaubey, which marked a departure from the mostly light-hearted parts she had played before, and her performance not only was critically acclaimed but also earned her a Screen Award and a Filmfare Award for ‘Best Actress.’ That same year, she starred in the coming-of-age film “Dear Zindagi,” where she shared scenes with Bollywood legend Shah Rukh Khan, and it earned her yet another Filmfare Award nomination. In 2017, she starred in the romantic comedy “Badrinath Ki Dulhania,” about an independent young woman who refuses to conform to patriarchal expectations from her chauvinistic fiancée. It earned her another Filmfare nomination. In 2018, Bhatt starred in the espionage thriller “Raazi” as a Kashmiri spy married to a Pakistani army officer, which proved to be one of the highest-grossing female-led Hindi films, and its success led Box Office India to credit Bhatt as the most successful contemporary actress of Hindi cinema. It also earned her another Filmfare Award for ‘Best Actress.’ In 2019, she starred in “Gully Boy,” which earned her a Filmfare Award for ‘Best Actress’ for the third time. In 2022, she appeared in the Telugu-language period film “RRR,” starring N.T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan. She is set to star in the Netflix spy film “Heart of Stone” alongside Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan.
