Domestic Violence Claim Leads to Suspension of Dallas Cowboys Player

NFL players are no strangers to run-ins with the law and criminal offenses. Charges of domestic violence and DWIs are particularly prevalent.

In 2017, Dallas Cowboys star running back Ezekiel Elliott became the latest star in the team to face domestic violence allegations. He was suspended six games as a result of the domestic violence claims but no criminal charges were brought.

A six game suspension without pay was imposed by the NFL. It was fought by the NFL Players Association.

Elliott denied an alleged offense of domestic violence in a series of incidents in 2016 in Ohio involving his former girlfriend.

He was not charged with a crime. However, the NFL determined after its investigation that Elliott, in its view, was guilty of domestic violence.

Elliott tried to fight the NFL’s findings in court. He was ultimately unsuccessful, noted the Washington Post.

Elliott was the latest Cowboys player to face allegations. Months earlier, Nolan Carroll was arrested in Dallas on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Jourdan Lewis, another Cowboys player, was recently acquitted of domestic assault in Michigan at the end of a two-day trial.

A former girlfriend accused him of assaulting her with a pillow. The woman said Lewis hit her in the face so hard she was forced into a wall. However, Lewis’ defense attorney claimed he simply tossed the pillow and was attempting to leave.

A report in the New York Times stated as many as one in 40 NFL players end up being charged with criminal offenses.

Drunk driving remains the most common offense among professional football players, according to the report.

It found 202 professional players were charged with drunk driving from 2000 to 2014. Assault and domestic violence offenses are the second biggest issues for NFL players.

The report noted over the 14 years, 88 players were convicted of assault and battery and 85 of domestic violence. Drug offenses were the third biggest category. The reported noted 82 players were convicted of drug offenses, over that time.

The Dallas Cowboys recorded 14 arrests in that period. The Minnesota Vikings recorded the most arrests amounting to 44.
