Drew Brees, Like Kurt Warner, Wouldn’t Let His Kids Play Football

In early May, Kurt Warner caused a minor stink when he appeared on “The Dan Patrick Show” and said that he wasn’t crazy about the idea of his children playing football.

“They both have the dream, like dad, to play in the NFL. That’s their goal. And when you hear things like the bounties, when you know certain things having played the game, and then obviously when you understand the size, the speed, the violence of the game…

It scares me as a dad. I just wonder – I wonder what the league’s going to be like…

…it’s a scary thing for me.”

Apparently, Drew Brees isn’t sold on the idea of his sons playing football either.

Hidden away in Sean Pamphilon’s very detailed account of the decision behind releasing the Gregg Williams audio tape is a quick anecdote about an interview the filmmaker conducted with Brees, in which the Pro-Bowl quarterback admits the game of football has it’s dangers:

The last question I asked him was about letting my son play tackle football and when would he let his boys play? He said because of the science and information he has gathered, he wouldn’t even consider the possibility until his kids were at least 13.

You won’t hear any disagreement from me. We never discussed Kurt Warner’s comments here on CSC at the time he first made them, but I have no problem with his desire to keep his kids away from football, just as I have no problem that Drew shares the same opinion on the subject.

Nor do I think it’s a hypocritical desire. We all want better for our children, do we not? My father was and still is a heavy smoker. But do you think he wants me to smoke? You better believe not. So if both quarterbacks think the game of football is a dangerous one, and nobody would know better, then it makes complete sense that they wouldn’t want their children to get involved. Nothing hypocritical about it.

Why haven’t we heard about Drew’s comments until now? Check back later today for more on that topic.
