The logo rollout coincides with the display of the University’s new logo. Both may be viewed on the Hofstra website at www.hofstra.edu.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

All Hofstra athletic teams are now officially known as the Pride, providing teams with a strong, consistent image. The new Hofstra Athletics logo consists of a graphic mark of a male and female lion in powerful, synchronized motion with the word mark of the Hofstra Pride or the specific sports team. This logo will be the only one used by Hofstra Athletics.

As part of a University-wide re-imaging project to better identify and clarify the University brand, Hofstra embarked on a year long process that involved students, alumni, faculty, boosters, staff and administration.

“The logo redesign project involved many constituents from the campus community, including current and former student-athletes,” Jack Hayes, Hofstra Director of Athletics said. “We are excited that the finished product incorporates many of their thoughts and concepts.”The logo design follows a highly successful year in which four Hofstra programs qualified for post-season play. The Pride men’s soccer, wrestling and softball teams claimed Colonial Athletic Association titles and earned berths to the NCAA Championships. The men’s basketball program finished its season with a 21-9 mark and participated in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT).

“The new logo is a modern, dynamic mark,” Pride Men’s Basketball Coach Tom Pecora said. “It represents the exciting time and the progress that Hofstra Athletics is enjoying today.” Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe, women’s lacrosse coach agrees. “The new Hofstra logo has a cohesive, unifying quality,” she says. “I am sure the Hofstra community will like it.”

The Hofstra Pride refers to a pack of lions, male and female, which work together towards a common goal and symbolize determination and strength. The Pride conveys both the teamwork and togetherness that is a trait of lions living in prides, who have a close bond and work together for the good of the entire group. The teamwork evident in prides are traits of Hofstra’s student-athletes, who support each other in furtherance of a common goal, while working tirelessly to represent their teams and, in turn, the University. The first consistent use of the word ?Å“Pride?Å¥ relating to athletics was in 1989 when the University’s athletic booster club was founded and called itself The Pride Club, simply referring to the pride that alumni and fans had for Hofstra teams.

The Hofstra seal, used as part of previous athletic logos, is still in use as an official symbol of Hofstra University and will be affixed to formal documents, and used for official purposes such as commencement, convocations, and official University functions.

Both the Pride logo and the University’s new logo, the ?Å“shield,?Å¥ were designed by advertising agency Powell New York, a full-service branding and marketing agency, selected as one of the ten firms to watch in 2005 by Advertising Age.
