How Patriots earned ugly win over Cardinals; Kyler Murray injury ‘doesn’t look good’

The New England Patriots took down the Arizona Cardinals 27-13 at State Farm Stadium on Monday night. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray was carted off the field after suffering a non-contact knee injury during Arizona’s opening drive and did not return.
  • New England finished the game on a 20-0 run that included a go-ahead fumble recovery TD from linebacker Raekwon McMillan with 5:32 left in the third quarter.
  • Colt McCoy was sacked six times and went 27-of-40 for 246 passing yards and an interception in place of Murray.
  • Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson (ankle) and wide receiver DeVante Parker (head) were also ruled out of the game with injuries.

The Athletic’s instant analysis:

New England finding ways to win

The Patriots’ winning formula isn’t pretty. In fact, it’s downright ugly. But at least they’ve got a formula and a chance still at the playoffs. That’s what they can hang their hats on after a sloppy win in Arizona. They have to play really good defense (possibly scoring a touchdown there, too), have impeccable special teams, and hope the offense can put together a drive or two. Maybe then, they have to hope, that’ll be enough. — Graff

Rookie Marcus Jones shines

Marcus Jones has become the Patriots’ most exciting player. The rookie third-round pick plays in all three phases. He’s the team’s kick and punt returner, he plays cornerback, and now he’s a wide receiver for a team that badly needs more production there.

Jones notched the first interception of his career Monday, had a first down on offense, and handled return duties. The interception made him the only player in the Super Bowl era to record a receiving touchdown, a punt return touchdown, and an interception in the same season. — Graff

Patriots’ offensive injuries piling up

The Patriots’ screen-obsessed offense is going to need some good news on the injury front this week as they look to keep their playoff hopes alive. They played the second half without their top two running backs and top two wide receivers after Stevenson and Parker both suffered injuries, while Jakobi Meyers and Damien Harris didn’t play.

The Patriots have a short week before playing the Raiders on Sunday, and their already-struggling offense can ill afford to play without their top playmakers. — Graff

What Murray’s injury means for Cardinals

It’s been one thing after another for this Cardinals team. A suspension to star receiver DeAndre Hopkins to start the season. Injuries. A dismissed offensive line coach for acting inappropriately in Mexico City. Now Kyler Murray. The fourth-year quarterback injured his knee on the game’s third play from scrimmage. He didn’t return.

With the Cardinals all but eliminated from the playoffs, the rest of this season needed to be about Murray’s development. It still could be. The Cardinals have not yet announced the severity of the injury. But this didn’t look good. As if this season could not have gotten more frustrating for Arizona. — Haller

What’s next for Kliff Kingsbury?

Coach Kliff Kingsbury and GM Steve Keim have had their job security questioned for most of the season. With the Cardinals at 4-9, that won’t change. But it may not lead to anything. Both Kingsbury and Keim signed extensions in March that keep them in place through the 2027 season. Owner Michael Bidwill could decide to make a move anyway, but it’s not likely. Arizona has had serious obstacles all season — in Monday’s loss the Cardinals started their ninth combination on the offensive line — and that could make it easy for Bidwill to simply stay put and hope for better luck next year. — Haller
