After a shock departure from Juventus, Cristiano Ronaldo has officially re-joined Man United, and it’s done wonders for the club’s social media.

Following rumours he would be transferring to Man City or joining Messi at PSG, the British club confirmed on Friday that they had reached an agreement to sign the 36-year-old for £12.8 million.

Ronaldo previously signed for Manchester United in 2003 at just 18-years-old and stayed with them until 2009, winning three consecutive Premier League titles and a Champions League before signing to Real Madrid.

Manchester United said they are “delighted” to welcome the five-time Ballon d’Or winner back, and the club’s popularity is sure to increase.

Man United gains millions of Instagram followers after Ronaldo signing

After announcing that Ronaldo had joined the club, Man United saw a surge in Instagram followers.

As per Social Blade, Manchester United had 42.7 million followers on August 26th, the day before the signing was made.

Now, on Saturday morning (August 28th), over 12 hours after the signing, they are on 45.2 million.

This is a total increase of 2.5 million followers thanks to Ronaldo’s return. However, over a million of them were in the first two hours after the announcement.

Ronaldo’s followers have also increased

Man United’s follower increase is pretty impressive, and so is that of Ronaldo himslf.

The Portuguese footballer has always been the most followed person on Instagram, aside from Instagram itself, and his following has just got even bigger.

On Thursday 26th August, he had 333.1 million followers. Now, on Saturday morning, he has 334.2 million, a sharp increase of just over a million followers.

He still remains the second most-followed person on Instagram, followed by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson at 265 million.

Juventus has lost followers

The transfer has drastically improved both Man United and Ronaldo’s social media, but the same can’t be said for Juventus.

After losing Ronaldo, the Italian club has actually lost around 100,000 followers, putting them down to 51.1 million.
