Stop us if you’ve heard this before: “I would never be in a fantasy football league unless it’s an auction league.” For traditional snake drafters, it’s tough to understand the “auction cult” that seemingly grows every year, but the reasoning is pretty simple.

While snake drafters are looking at rankings and debating whether they should draft Justin Jefferson or Christian McCaffrey, auction drafters are looking at 2023 fantasy dollar value projections and figuring out a way to fit both into their budgets.

Doesn’t that just sound like more fun?

It’s not easy to construct a team full of superstars, of course, but the mere possibility of getting any player you want is enough to keep auction devotees coming back for more. Starting your preseason prep with a handy set of projected auction values is a necessary step for season-long success.

Of course, experienced auction drafters know that once the nominations and bids start flying, the projected values below are merely suggestions. The final prices of similar players can vary greatly based on when a player gets nominated, how many similar players are still available, the amount of money each owner has left, and what position each owner needs.

2023 STANDARD RANKINGS:QBs | RBs | WRs | TEs | D/STs | Ks | Top 200 | S-Flex | IDP

That’s why we always refer to our preseason auction values as “projections.” Calvin Ridley could just as easily go for $24 as $16 simply based on the timing of his nomination. Similarly, if two owners are determined to get Rhamondre Stevenson, he might go for $40-plus. In other leagues where every owner is somewhat leery of him because of Bill Belichick’s fickle nature regarding RBs, Stevenson might go for $27.

Trendy sleepers almost always get bid up, and “boring veterans” will usually go for less than projected. Typically, that’s how you find values, but, again, it all depends on when a player is nominated. If DeAndre Hopkins isn’t nominated until well into the second hour of your auction, all it takes is one owner that still needs a WR3 (and has a decent amount of money to play with) to overpay for him. If Hopkins had been nominated in the first 20 minutes of the auction, he might go for $10 while owners hang onto their money for Amon-Ra St. Brown or Garrett Wilson.

A good rule of thumb is to avoid early bidding wars on good-but-not-great players when everyone is flush with cash. As long as you do that – and pay attention to budgets, rosters, and available players in each tier at every position – you can navigate your auction successfully.

2023 FANTASY SLEEPERSQBs | RBs | WRs | TEs | D/STs | Each Team

The latter point is important. The last tier-2 running back (Bijan Robinson, Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs, Tony Pollard, Nick Chubb, Derrick Henry, Joe Mixon, Jonathan Taylor) will inevitably get bid up. If you want one of those players, it’s usually better to target the second-to-last available. If you want someone specific, then go get him, but remaining disciplined and planning ahead will help you avoid begrudgingly bidding $5 for the stream of $1 fliers that inevitably go at the end of every auction. The only thing worse than bidding $10 on a D/ST or kicker is having $10 left over at the end of an auction.

The “auction cult” knows this, which is why it views the projected values below as little more than a guide. If you budget out how much money you want to allocate to each position, then target a few players in each tier, you can easily adjust throughout your auction. You won’t get every player you want for the exact prices you want, but you should always have high-upside options and the ability to pivot when things get wild.
