Tom Brady's contract details: How much is QB making in second season with Buccaneers?

No NFL player has made more in their career than Tom Brady. The Buccaneers’ quarterback is playing his 22nd NFL season and is under contract for a 23rd. To date, he has made just shy of $300 million playing quarterback.

That said, Brady has never been the NFL’s highest-paid player. In fact, he has never come particularly close to the high-water mark. During his days with the Patriots, he often took team-friendly discounts to help the team build around him.

With the Buccaneers, Brady has taken more money, but he is making use of void years to defray the cost for his team. What does that mean? He’s essentially taking deferred payments to allow his team to add more talent around him.

Brady is one of the smartest negotiators in the NFL from a team-building standpoint. But how much is he earning in 2021? And how much has he earned during his career? Here’s an in-depth look at Brady’s contract details, contract history and net worth as faces the team that paid him for nearly two decades.

Tom Brady contract details

Brady originally signed a two-year deal with the Buccaneers worth $50 million. So, he is in the last year of his original contract in 2021, but he signed an additional one-year extension to add $25 million more to the deal.

Brady’s contract also contains void years, a tool which is becoming popular and helps teams create more present cap space. Essentially, the Buccaneers have added void years to the contract where they will give Brady deferred payments, but he will not be under contract with the team unless he signs another new deal.

Also, while Brady is making an average of $25 million a year, the way in which the Buccaneers restructured the deal will cause Brady to make more than $40 million in 2021. This is because Brady will be making most of his signing bonus in 2021.

That said, the void years help defray the present cost of his cap hit; Brady counts for just $10.5 million against the cap.

Below is a breakdown of Brady’s contract value by year with the Buccaneers, per Spotrac.com and NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Year Contract value 2020 $25 million 2021 $41.075 million 2022 $8.925 million

That said, the Buccaneers will have a $24 million cap hit in 2023 regardless of whether Brady plays for them or not. That’s because of the void years attached to his contract.

Tom Brady’s contract history

Brady was under contract with the Patriots for 20 years before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2020. He had never been available on the free-agent market before that, as he had always agreed to extensions and revised contracts with the Patriots.

Below is a look at the contracts that Brady signed with the Patriots during his 20-year stint in Foxboro.

Year signed Length Contract value 2000 3 years $0.86 million 2002 5 years $30.5 million 2005 6 years $60 million 2010 4 years $72 million 2013 3 years $27 million 2016 2 years $41 million 2019 1 year $23 million

Of course, the most notable of the bunch is the three-year extension Brady agreed to in 2013. His contracts escalated year-to-year until he accepted that extension, which added a shockingly small sum of $27 million in new money at a time when quarterback contracts were skyrocketing.

Why did Brady do that? At the time, it was an effort to keep him in New England for the rest of his career. The extension would pay him through 2017, so that would take Brady right through his age-40 season. It was anticipated he would be close to retirement at that point.

The Patriots also moved some money around from the earlier portion of Brady’s contract to balance out his earnings from 2013 through 2017. So, in reality, he was making about $13 million a year for five years. That was still peanuts for a quarterback, but it was something Brady wanted to do to continue to win.

Tom Brady net worth

Forbes reports that Brady ranks ninth among the 2021 highest-paid athletes earning, as it projects $45 million in salary/winnings and $31 million in endorsements.

The big pay days have moved Brady up the list of net worth among celebritys. According to Celebrity Net Worth, he has a net worth of $250 million, with estimates of $230 million for the first 20 years of his NFL career and over $150 million in endorsements.

However, his wife is the one that brings home most of the money between the two of them. Celebrity Net Worth lists her fortune as $400 million, and that the couple is worth a combined $650 million.

How much is TB12 worth?

There is no exact estimate for how much TB12, Brady’s lifestyle brand, but Growjo reports that it makes as much as $20.3 million per year, and that employees bring in an estimated revenue of $270,000. It is not Brady’s only company, however, as he also started up 199 Productions in March 2020, according to the NFL.
