Travis Kelce committed to play football at the University of Alabama alongside his brother, Jason Kelce, who was a starting left guard for the team. He was a two-star recruit coming out of high school and received offers from other universities including the University of Akron and Eastern Michigan University.

Kelce joined his brother Jason at the University of Cincinnati. Jason played as part of the defensive team at the time, while Travis entered as a tight end. The brothers had previously played together at the Cleveland Heights high school.

At college, Kelce played as a tight end and at times, as a quarterback. He redshirted the 2008 season and finished his first official year at college with 47 rushing yards, 2 touchdowns and one reception of 3 yards.

Kelce was not allowed to play the 2010 season due to a team rule violation that saw him being suspended for the entire year. In 2011, Kelce returned to the team as a tight end and recorded 150 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
