Aaron Rodgers’ ‘Jeopardy!’ troll insists he knew correct answer, but decided to poke fun instead

A month before he taped a “Jeopardy!” episode with Aaron Rodgers guest hosting, Scott Shewfelt watched the end of the NFC Championship Game and reacted the same as most everyone else when the Packers quarterback trotted off the field on fourth down late in the fourth quarter.

The Green Bay Packers trailed by eight points with just more than two minutes remaining against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Instead of going for it on fourth and goal from the 8-yard line, head coach Matt LaFleur opted to kick a field goal. The Packers never got the ball back in an eventual 31-26 loss and their season ended one game short of the Super Bowl for the second consecutive year.

Shewfelt, a 39-year-old Los Angeles resident, author and former Capitol Hill reporter from Ontario who now works at a movie studio, made a moneyline bet on the Packers in that game, which means he placed a monetary wager that the Packers would beat the Buccaneers straight up. Asked who his favorite team is, Shewfelt said he roots for whomever he bets on. He does have a couple of family members who are Detroit Lions fans.

During the Final Jeopardy segment of Rodgers’ first episode as guest host in place of the late Alex Trebek, Shewfelt poked fun at the defining moment of the Packers’ season-ending loss, perhaps because of some lingering frustration from the money he lost that night.

(I tweeted this before I talked to Shewfelt on Tuesday night, but I know my sports gamblers when I see them.)

The funny part about the now-viral moment is that Shewfelt insists he would’ve nailed the correct response to the Final Jeopardy clue (Mr. Rogers from “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood”), but because he put no money at stake, he decided to poke fun at the other Mr. Rodgers and his team instead.

“It was the question,” Shewfelt said of his Final Jeopardy answer. “I feel like if you were gonna do some sort of jab or troll … that’s the only question. I mean, it’s a fair question.”

Shewfelt said that since the moment from Monday’s episode went viral, some of his personal information, including his address, has been put online. He (jokingly) named LaFleur as a prime suspect. Hmm, maybe the Packers’ head coach was watching “Jeopardy!” on Monday and had some free time on his hands between draft prep film sessions.

No matter how deflective Rodgers was shortly after the NFC title game when asked if he agreed with the decision to kick the field goal, everyone knows he would’ve liked to stay on the field. His reaction to Shewfelt’s joke on Monday night’s episode proved as much. If he had scrambled a couple of yards on third down, which he could’ve easily done, LaFleur probably would’ve gone for it on fourth down. But I digress.

Shewfelt wasn’t concerned with how Rodgers might react to his Final Jeopardy answer because he felt certain Rodgers agreed with him that the Packers should’ve gone for it.

“The last thing I saw of Aaron before taping was that interview he gave after the game when it was like a hostage situation, where he was just so distraught,” Shewfelt said. “He wasn’t saying what he wanted to say, but you could just tell what he thought. That was definitely rattling around in my brain when we got there.

“I didn’t know what his reaction was going to be, but I wouldn’t have put it unless I was 100 percent sure he didn’t want to kick the field goal. Everyone’s like, ‘It’s a troll’ or whatever, and I guess I did put him in kind of an awkward position on national TV, but I feel like I knew the answer to it.”

In a behind-the-scenes clip released by “Jeopardy!,” Rodgers is shown talking with Shewfelt after the show about his answer. Safe to say he got a good laugh out of it even beyond his reaction shown on television.
