It’s one of the most popular films from the early 2000s.

But fans have been shocked to learn the age difference between two of the stars of Mean Girls who played mother and daughter.

Rachel McAdams famously played Regina George, the high school queen bee and head of the group known as The Plastics.

Amy Poehler meanwhile, played her mother, a self-titled ‘cool mum’ who loves pink velour tracksuits, and dishes out free condoms and alcohol to minors.

And it turns out that the fun-loving mum wasn’t that much older than her cruel fictional daughter.

Amy was only 32 when she filmed the hit romcom in 2004, making her a very young mother of a teenager.

While Rachel was in fact several years older than her character, being 25 when the film was released.

This means that the duo had only a seven year age gap between them when they starred in the movie.

The revelation left fans gobsmacked, and they immediately took to Twitter to voice their shock.

One said: ‘Hold up, Amy Poehler, who plays Rachel McAdams’ mom in ‘Mean Girls,’ is only 7 years older than her in real life???? Cinema is a lie’.

Another echoed: ‘Amy Poehler playing Rachel McAdams’s mom in Mean Girls when they were only 7 years apart is still so funny.’

A third complained: ‘I just learnt I’m the same age Amy Poehler was when she played Rachel McAdams mum in Mean Girls (32), and that has COMPLETELY RUINED MY DAY’.

While a fourth said: ‘amy poehler is 7 years older than rachel mcadams, wild for her to have played her mom in mean girls’.

And a fifth agreed, writing: ‘I’m watching Mean Girls because I was curious if it aged well and it’s really funny that Amy Poehler plays Rachel McAdams’ mom despite being only 7 years older. But it works.’

To add even more surprise, Rachel was also seven years older than her co-star Lindsay Logan, who was 17 when the film came out.

It comes after the actress said she would be open to reprising the iconic role of Regina again in a fan Q&A.

After she was asked which character she would play again she said: ‘I always want to go back and do all of them again.

‘You really fall in love with them. I mean, it would be fun to play Regina George later in life and see where life took her after Mean Girls.’
