Braugher has been a staple in the entertainment industry for decades, but he reached a younger audience with his portrayal of Captain Ray Holt on the TV series Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Fans of the actor may have recognized him from his work on the NBC drama Homicide: Life on the Street, where he played Detective Frank Pembleton from 1992 to 1998.

He was able to win an Emmy for his work on the show, and, more importantly, meet his future spouse and fellow actress Ami Brabson.

The two were married in 1992 and would go on to have three children.

But their successful life at home didn’t stop either of their on-camera careers.

Ami has appeared in a number of television series including Law & Order, Bull, Power, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and The Jury.

Her website states she is a singer and producer as well.

Meanwhile, Braugher scored his breakout role with the 1989 Oscar-winning film Glory which starred Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington.

He would go on to enjoy a celebrated career in television and earned a total of 11 Emmy nominations for his various performances.

His final film appearance was for the movie She Said, which follows the two journalists who unearthed initial allegations against disgraced movie producer Harvey Weinstein.

There will be a posthumous release of the murder-mystery Netflix show The Residence, where he played the character A. B. Wynter.

Former cast and producers of Brooklyn Nine-Nine have begun to share heart wrenching tributes for the actor who was pivotal to the show’s success.

Terry Crews, who played Terry Jeffords in the program, said on Instagram that he was honored to have worked with him for eight years.

“Can’t believe you’re gone so soon. I’m honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent,” Crews wrote in the post.

“This hurts. You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you.”

The co-creators of the show, Dan Goor and Michael Shur, also said they were heartbroken by the news.

“Like everyone who was fortunate enough to know Andre, we are heartbroken by the news of his passing,” they said in a statement to Deadline.

“He was one of the most talented dramatic actors in history, and then he decided to try comedy, and he was instantly one of the funniest people ever to do it.

“But even greater than his acting talent was the happiness and joy he brought to those around him.

“And his smile… he had the greatest, brightest, most wonderful smile.

“Our thoughts and love go to his beautiful, amazing family, whom he loved more than anything.

“We are grateful for the time we had with him.”

Braugher’s earlier experiences working on heavy cop dramas played into his character on Brooklyn Nine-Nine but in a much different way.

Speaking about making the shift to comedy, Braugher told the Associated Press: “I just felt as though it was an opportunity to do something strikingly different from the rest of my career.

“I like it because it just simply opens up my mind and forces me to think in a different way.

“So I think I’ve become much more sort of supple as an actor, and more open to the incredible number of possibilities of how to play a scene.”

Braugher’s death was confirmed by his publicist Jennifer Allen, but the details of his illness remain unclear.

Besides his wife and his three sons, Michael, Isaiah and John Wesley, Andre is also survived by his brother Charles Jennings, and his mom, Sally Braugher.
