Juvenile Arrested for Armed Carjacking in Northeast

(Washington, DC) – Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Carjacking Task Force the FBI Washington Field Office Violent Crimes Task Force announce a juvenile has been arrested in connection to an armed carjacking of a federal agent in the 100 block of 12th Street, Northeast.

On Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at approximately 3:44 p.m., two suspects approached the victim, who was outside of their vehicle, two suspects carjacked the victim at gunpoint while the victim was getting out of the victim’s vehicle. The suspects fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle. The vehicle was found at 4:10 p.m. in the 1000 block of 15th Street, Southeast.

On Monday, December 5, 2023, 17-year-old Devonta Lynch, of Southeast, DC, was arrested and charged, as an adult under Title 16, with Armed Carjacking (Gun).

This case remains under investigation. Second Arrest Made for Armed Offenses

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Third District announce a teen has been arrested for an armed robbery and an armed carjacking that occurred in the District on Monday, November 13, 2023.

At approximately 3:57 pm, the suspects began following the victim as they left the metro station. Once the victim was in the 1700 block of 7th Street, Northwest, the suspects brandished handguns and took property from the victim. The suspects fled the scene.

Later on that day, at approximately 5:57 pm, the same group of suspects approached the victims in the 2400 block of Market Place, Northeast, while they were loading their vehicle. The suspects brandished handguns and took property and the vehicle keys from the victims. The suspects fled the scene in the victims’ vehicle. The vehicle has been recovered.

Detectives were able to track the victims’ vehicle using the tracking technology that is installed in the victims’ vehicle, and with the quick assistance of MPD’s helicopter Falcon 1, officers were able to locate the vehicle and arrest one person.

On Monday, November 13, 2023, a 20-year-old male, of Southeast DC was arrested and charged with Armed Robbery and Armed Carjacking.

On Tuesday, November 14, 2023, a 17-year-old juvenile male, of Northeast, DC, was arrested and charged with Armed Robbery and Armed Carjacking.

Three Juveniles Arrested for an Unarmed Carjacking in Southeast

(Washington, DC) – Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s First District announce three juvenile males have been arrested for an unarmed carjacking that occurred in the 300 block of 9th Street, Southeast.

On Saturday, November 11, 2023, at approximately 8:07 p.m., one of the suspects entered a ride share vehicle. Once inside, the suspect assaulted the driver and ordered the victim to get out of the car. The victim complied. Two other suspects then entered the vehicle and fled the scene. The vehicle was located in 1600 block of 28th Street, Southeast, and officers observed four suspects walking away from the vehicle. The suspects fled and three of them were apprehended.

The suspects, a 15-year-old juvenile male of Southeast, DC, a 14-year-old juvenile male and a 12-year-old juvenile male, both of Northwest, DC, were arrested and charged with Unarmed Carjacking.

Two Arrested for Multiple DC Carjackings and Robberies

(Washington, DC) – The Metropolitan Police Department announces the arrest of two people for multiple carjackings and robberies throughout the city.

On October 18, 2023, the Metropolitan Police Department Sixth District Detective Unit, Carjacking Task Force, and the Emergency Response Team executed a search warrant in the 3000 block of Stanton Road, Southeast. As a result of the search warrant, a man and a juvenile male were arrested on probable cause. Additionally, a firearm was recovered.

Three Teens Arrested for Armed Carjackings

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Three teens were arrested for two armed carjackings that occurred in the Sixth District.

On Sunday, October 8, 2023, at approximately 11:40 p.m., the suspects approached the victim, who was seated in her car in the 200 block of 58th Street, Northeast. The suspects pointed firearms at the victim and demanded that she exit the vehicle. Once the victim complied, the suspects took the victim’s car and left the location.

On Monday, October 9, 2023, at approximately 2:23 a.m., the suspects approached the victim, who was seated in his car in the 1600 block of 21st Place, Southeast. The suspects brandished firearms and demanded the victim’s property. The suspects then took the victim’s vehicle.

Shorly after the second carjacking, a Seat Pleasant Police Department officer observed both stolen vehicles. Through a joint effort by MPD, the Seat Pleasant Police Department, and the Fairfax County Police Department, all three suspects were apprehended.

On Monday, October 9, 2023, a 14-year-old juvenile male, a 15-year-old juvenile male, and a 16-year-old juvenile male, all of Northeast, DC, were arrested and charged with Armed Carjacking (Gun).

MPD Arrests Teenage Carjackers for String of Offenses Across the District

Five teenagers have been arrested and charged with multiple offenses following a spree of robberies and carjackings throughout the city. After a week-long investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD)’s Carjacking Task Force, the teenagers were arrested after crashing the stolen car they were traveling in.

“We want to thank the community for their support and cooperation with our detectives as they investigated this carjacking pattern,” Acting Chief Pamela A. Smith said today. “Over the past week, our detectives worked diligently over many hours to close these cases. These arrests are a testament to their dedication and professionalism.”

On Tuesday, August 29, 2023, two victims were walking along the street when the teenage robbers approached and attempted to grab the victims’ property. The victims managed to fight off the suspects, who fled in a stolen car. MPD’s helicopter, Falcon, located the car and tracked it as it drove erratically through the city. When the car crashed, the suspects were apprehended by nearby officers.

A 13-year-old female, a 14-year-old male, a 15-year-old male all of Northeast, DC, and a 13-year-old female and a 16-year-old male of Southeast, DC, were arrested and charged with the following offenses in relation to this incident.

MPD Continues Efforts to Decrease Fatal and Serious Injury Traffic Crashes Through a Traffic Safety Compliance Checkpoint in the 1100 Block of Pennsylvania Avenue, Southeast

(Washington, DC) – As the District of Columbia sees a nearly 50% increase in traffic fatalities, the Metropolitan Police Department will continue our focus on traffic enforcement and education throughout the city. Yesterday evening, MPD continued our efforts through a high-visibility Traffic Safety Compliance Checkpoint in the 1100 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, Southeast.

In addition to focusing on traffic safety, the high-visibility Traffic Safety Compliance Checkpoint focused on promoting safe driving, providing education, traffic violation enforcement, along with taking suspected impaired drivers and unsafe drivers off the road.

During the Traffic Safety Compliance Checkpoint, MPD had the below outcomes:

The District of Columbia continues to work towards eliminating all fatal and serious injury crashes through the citywide Vision Zero initiative. MPD wants drivers to stay safe while on the roads and address drivers who put others at risk. Mayor Bowser Announces Hyundai Anti-Theft Mobile ClinicMonday, July 24, 2023Starting Thursday, District Residents Who Own or Lease Certain Hyundai Makes and Models Can Receive Free Anti-Theft Technology(Washington, DC) - Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), and representatives from Hyundai Motor Company announced an anti-theft mobile clinic designed to increase vehicle security. The multi-day clinic will provide District motorists who own or lease certain Hyundai makes and models with the latest anti-theft technology. This technology, which will be installed by Hyundai technicians, will come at no cost to residents and will be available starting Thursday, July 27 through Monday, July 31 from 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. The installations will be performed by on-site service technicians who will install and complete the software upgrade, which is expected to take less than an hour. The installations will take place at RFK Parking Lot 8, located at 2400 Independence Avenue SE, with no appointment necessary.

“We are encouraging all eligible DC residents to take advantage of this free software upgrade,” said Mayor Bowser. “We know that having your car stolen can be a frustrating, stressful, and costly experience. Earlier this year, we started distributing free wheel locks at our MPD district stations, and installing this anti-theft software is one more way for residents to protect their vehicles.”

During the event, Hyundai also provided two simulated demos of the anti-theft technology. The anti-theft vehicle software upgrade is available for approximately 3.8 million vehicles. The upgrade will modify certain vehicle control modules on Hyundai vehicles equipped with standard “turn-key-to-start” ignition systems. As a result, locking the doors with the key fob will set the factory alarm and activate an “ignition kill” feature so the vehicle cannot be started when individuals try to steal the vehicle by using the popularized theft mode. Once the anti-theft software is updated in the affected vehicle, to further deter would-be thieves, Hyundai will also install anti-theft decals to the front windows of the vehicle. Engine immobilizers are now standard on all Hyundai vehicles produced as of November 2021. The updates became available for various models at the beginning of February 2023.

In February, Mayor Bowser and MPD also rolled out a program to distribute free steering wheel locks to residents who own a 2011-2021 Kia or Hyundai to prevent vehicle thefts. The steering wheel locks are still being given to qualified residents on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents can check to see if their local District station has any wheel locks remaining by going to mpdc.dc.gov/autotheft.

“It is unacceptable that criminals are targeting District residents and stealing their vehicles. In some cases, these vehicles are later used to commit acts of violent crime in our city,” said Acting Chief of Police at the Metropolitan Police Department Pamela A. On May 24, 2023, at approximately 8:40 pm, two suspects approached the victim in the 3300 of Benning Road, Northeast. The suspects brandished handguns and demanded property from the victim. On Wednesday, July 19, 2023, pursuant to a DC Superior Court custody order a 15-year-old juvenile male of Southeast, DC, was arrested and charged with Armed Carjacking (Gun).

(Washington, DC) – Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s First District announce an arrest has been made in reference to an Unarmed Carjacking and Simple Assault offense that occurred on Saturday, July 8, 2023, in the 400 block of 1st Street, Northwest.

At approximately 1:50 pm, the suspect approached the victims, who were seated in a vehicle, at the listed location. The suspect assaulted the victims and attempted to take their vehicle. The suspect was apprehended by MPD officers with assistance from the US Capitol Police.

On Saturday, July 8, 2023, 33-year-old Kwuan Arrington, of Trenton, NJ, was arrested and charged with Unarmed Carjacking and Simple Assault.

Arrest Made in Armed Robbery (Gun) and Theft One (Stolen Auto) Offenses in the Third and Fourth Districts

(Washington, DC) – Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Carjacking Task Force announce an arrest has been made in reference to Armed Robbery (Gun) and Theft One (Stolen Auto) offenses that occurred on Sunday, April 9, 2023, in the Third and Fourth Districts.

• Armed Robbery (Gun): At approximately 6:40 pm, the suspects approached the victim in the 1100 block of U Street, Northwest. One of the suspects brandished a handgun and demanded the victim’s property. The victim complied. The suspects took the victim’s property then fled the scene. CCN: 23-055-180

On Monday, June 26, 2023, pursuant to a DC Superior Court custody order, 17-year-old Hanif Brown, of Northeast, DC, was arrested. After consultation with the United States Attorney’s Office, he was charged as an adult under Title 16 for Armed Robbery (Gun).

He was additionally charged as an adult under Title 16 for the below offenses:

• Theft One (Stolen Auto): At approximately 3:44 pm, the suspects, who were in a vehicle, approached the victim in the 4700 block of 9th Street, Northwest. The suspect exited their vehicle and pushed the victim away from their vehicle. The suspect then fled the scene in the victim’s vehicle followed by the suspects’ vehicle. • Armed Robbery (Gun): At approximately 9:19 pm, the suspects approached the victims in the 1300 block of Wallach Place, Northwest. MPD Stepped Up Traffic Enforcement and Education Last Weekend in the 4600 and 4700 Blocks of South Capitol Street Southwest

(Washington, DC) – Last weekend the Metropolitan Police Department stepped up traffic enforcement and education in the 4600 and 4700 blocks of South Capitol Street Southwest through high visibility Traffic Safety Compliance Checkpoints. The District of Columbia continues to work towards eliminating all fatal and serious injury crashes through the citywide Vision Zero initiative. MPD wants drivers to stay safe while on the roads and address drivers who put others at risk. 

MPD’s high visibility Traffic Safety Compliance Checkpoint occurred both on Friday, June 16, and Saturday, June 17 in the 4600 block and 4700 blocks of South Capitol Street, Southwest. between the hours of 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. The primary purpose was to promote public safety by promoting safe driving, providing education, traffic violation enforcement, along with taking suspected impaired drivers and unsafe drivers off the road.

· Always use a designated driver – a friend who is not drinking or otherwise impaired, ride-share, cab or public transportation – to get home.

· Walking while impaired is also dangerous. Have someone sober walk you home or stay with you until a sober driver is available to pick you up.

· Report impaired drivers – Call 911.

· Hosting a party? Offer nonalcoholic drinks. Monitor who is drinking and how they are getting home.

Remember, impaired driving is not just from alcohol. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.

If you see someone driving unsafely, call 9-1-1 immediately. 

MPD will continue stepping up traffic enforcement and education this summer as the District of Columbia surpasses a 50% increase in traffic fatalities when compared to this time last year. Each one of MPD’s seven districts have assigned officers on each shift to focus solely on traffic enforcement and drivers who are under the influence, distracted, or driving in an unsafe manner. Additional Traffic Safety Compliance Checkpoints are planned for numerous locations through the district.

The Metropolitan Police Department is announcing an increase in MPD’s Gun Tip Reward Program in efforts to remove illegal and dangerous firearms from our communities.

This year, MPD and our federal partners have seized approximately 1,400 illegal firearms off the streets of the District of Columbia. But we can’t do it alone and we need the community’s help when it comes holding violent offenders accountable and getting illegal guns out of our community.

Starting Friday, any gun tip that leads to the arrest and seizure of an illegal firearm will now result in a $1,000 minimum reward and a maximum reward of $2,500. Tips leading to the arrest and seizure of a “ghost gun” or a firearm equipped with an automatic conversion device are eligible for an additional reward of up to $5,000, for a total possible reward of $7,500.

With this new increase, if you call in a tip that leads to an arrest and seizure of an illegal gun, you will get at least $1,000, no matter what.

“Tips and information from the community about illegal guns have played a vital role in arrests and seizures of illegal guns,” said Interim Chief of Police Ashan Benedict. “We’re hoping this increase in minimum reward money will help convince people to pick up the phone and call us in an effort to make our city a safer place.”

On Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at approximately 5:00 pm, the suspect exited a vehicle that was operated by another suspect and approached the victim in the 2300 block of Elvans Road, Southeast. The suspect assaulted the victim and attempted to take the victim’s property. The suspect fled the scene in the vehicle without obtaining any property.
