Dancing With the Stars Season 24 Week 8 Recap: The Judges Go Hard on Simone and Bonner

Shady was the name of the game on Dancing With the Stars tonight, and it had nothing to do with who was eliminated in week eight of the competition (but more on that in a second). Simone Biles and Bonner Bolton came under attack from the judges, and social media can’t seem to agree on who was right.

Head judge Len Goodman slammed viewers at home for keeping Bonner Bolton this far into the competition, noting that Bonner’s frustration in rehearsal was the result of him being in over his head (or skill level). And then when Carrie Ann Inaba and Julianne Hough pointed out Simone Biles’ lack of emotion—or the fact that she doesn’t allow people “in”—Simone shot back with words of her own. (#SmilesDontWinGoldMedals, for the win.) Apparently smiles don’t win Mirrorballs either, because at the end of the episode, it was revealed Simone has made it to week nine of the competition. But will her “attitude” affect how viewers at home perceive her? Or will more fans come out to vote?

As for the elimination, it was bye-bye Bonner. (Len can’t blame the viewers anymore.) Clearly not surprised, the cowboy told the audience that he “went further than I ever thought I would,” and subsequently, “I found out how much I could take.”

Update: Following his elimination, I asked Bonner how he was doing, and he said he was “great.” Call me cynical, but I didn’t believe him. OK, so let’s try it again, Bonner. How are you really doing? “I’m so proud of myself and thankful that I made it this far,” he told me. “I’ve been in a lot of pain throughout this whole competition, and it’s a relief to know actually that I don’t have to dance tomorrow. I [didn’t] want to!”

Bonner might have been chuckling through those last comments, but it was obvious there was a lot of hurt behind his rather stoic demeanor. When I asked about Len’s comments that it was America’s fault for keeping him in the competition this long, Bonner took a more revealing approach. “I don’t appreciate much of what the judges said throughout the whole season to me,” he admitted. “I don’t have a lot of respect for it, but I’m thankful for the experience I got to have here, the other people I got to meet, how much I discovered I can move again and inspire others throughout my movement, and the strength that I dug down deep to find and do this.”
