G.U.Y.

G.U.Y.

It’s “Greetings from Eros”.

To me, the song refers to her wanting to take on the role of Eros at first-who has been interpreted as a bisexual god, not simply one-side-or-the-other-Gaga wants to shed wooden ideas and embrace her ‘self’ that isn’t represented. I’ll start off at this point because it sets the tone for the rest of the meaning to me. “I wanna be that guy.” “Gee; you-why?” The comment she receives from Gaga’s partner completely disregards her. The girl doesn’t believe in transgender people, in transformation, is just closed-minded/superficial about it. Likely a surprise for Gaga, it shows the partner having some level of understanding, but not being willing to accept Gaga fully for the person she is. The partner plays along with what Gaga’s shared, and allows Gaga to treat her as a man would, though she’s still superficially oriented toward Gaga/is into experimenting, etc. Gaga still feels masculine, still thinks masculine. Maybe it was a role she played once, but Eros is seeping/seeped into her. “I’m in charge like a G.U.Y; I’ll lay down face up this time, under you like a G.U.Y.” The problem is, her partner’s words are stuck in her head. “Gee, you-why?” and Gaga can’t shake this. Attacked from the same side, Gaga realizes she’s stuck in her form; her role. But subconsciously she resists, or the masculine feelings permeate through still. “I’m gonna wear the towel; the power to leave you” comes out of wanting to resist her partner who doesn’t accept or understand fully. Gaga wants to do what she’s wanted to but has been unable to do-maybe even what guys have done to her in the past-but because she’s trapped, she realizes she wants to leave her partner, ‘like a G.U.Y.’ would do. She’s caught between loving women and wanting them to treat her like a man in ways, but can’t progress any further because she is a woman and her partners whom she looks to for understanding instead fail her. So she inadvertently understands the underhanded, lower-form of male; just as broken as the men she pushes away from. “I wanna be that guy (G.U.Y.) I’ll wreck you right up guy (G.U.Y.)”

If this isn’t the way she intended it, it’s the meaning that comes across for me. The tragedy of being transgender. Not a Tomboy-a girl who likes guys and hangs out with them, etc-but the girl who was born a girl yet feels they should have been made male, who pushes down her true feelings and ideas because she believes transformation isn’t possible for her.
