Hofstra University is a private university in Hempstead, New York. It is the largest private university in the state and, according to U.S. News & World Report, ranked tied for 160th among national universities.


The college was established as an extension of New York University, proposed by a Hempstead resident and superintendent of schools, Truesdel Peck Calkins. It was initially named Nassau College—Hofstra Memorial of New York University at Hempstead, Long Island. In 1939, the college became an independent Hofstra College and achieved university status in 1963.

Academics & Campus

The campus covers a 244-acre area and comprises approximately 117 buildings. Within its ten schools, Hofstra offers roughly 175 graduate and 165 undergraduate programs. Some schools include Business, Communication, Education, Engineering and Applied Science, Health Professions and Human Services, Honor studies, Liberal Arts and Sciences, School of Law, and School of Medicine. The university is accredited in 32 areas.

Athletics -Pride

The sports teams compete in the NCAA Division I and are members of the Colonial Athletic Association. The wrestling team competes in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association in the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.

  Design Guidelines

The Pride athletic teams include:

Women: basketball, cross country, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball.

Men: baseball, basketball, cross country, lacrosse, soccer, and tennis.

The men’s basketball team won back-to-back America East Men’s Basketball Tournament titles in 2000 and 2001. These were their first appearances in the Division I championship since the 1970s. Go Blue, White, & Gold!
