How many Champions League trophies have Bayern Munich won? Year-by-year knockout history

Bayern Munich have long been one of Europe’s elite clubs, consistently dominating in their own country as well as being major players on the continental scene.

Their last win in the Champions League came in 2020, when they edged out Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the final, behind closed doors, as they capped off a brilliant treble-winning campaign.

In 2021/22, they trail surprise package Villarreal 1-0 in the quarter-finals, but they welcome the Spanish side to their home ground for the second leg still largely fancied to go through.

We look back at their pedigree in the competition and take a closer look at the history of one of Europe’s most successful clubs.

How many Champions Leagues have Bayern Munich won?

With six competition wins, Bayern Munich lie within the elite of the competition, joint with Liverpool but one behind second-placed AC Milan and seven off runaway leaders Real Madrid. Their most recent success came two years ago as they beat PSG 1-0 in the final thanks to a Kingsley Coman goal.

They managed to win three Champions League titles on the bounce from the 1973/74 to the 1975/76 seasons. However, they have suffered losses as well, most notably in the 1998-99 final as Manchester United scored two injury-time goals to snatch a victory in Barcelona.

Their next win came in the 2000/01 season, edging out Valencia on penalties. They reached the final in 2009, but lost out to Jose Mourinho’s treble-winning Inter. Next up was another heartbreaking loss in 2012, this time to Chelsea: having dominated the final for the whole game, they lost on penalties — and at their home ground.

However, they got their victory in the final the very next year, edging German rivals Borussia Dortmund 2-1 thanks to a late Arjen Robben goal.
