Katy Perry was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live last night, and the campy pop star certainly brought two memorable looks with her for the occasion. For the show, which was hosted by actor Willem Dafoe, Perry embraced a kitschy vibe for both her fashion and beauty choices. She performed in front of a whimsical backdrop complete with giant mushrooms, where she sang her hits “When I’m Gone” (in red latex chaps, complete with a mushroom headpiece) and “Never Really Over” (where she switched into a frothy blue tulle gown).

For glam, Perry’s hair stylist Jesus Guerrero and makeup artist Michael Anthony furthered the playful vibe—and Vogue has a closer look at how the duo achieved the look. For hair, “the inspiration came from her recent music video for ‘When I’m Gone,’” says Guerrero. “We wanted to create a very textured and messy, yet perfectly-shiny look for her stage performance.” To achieve the look, Guerrero started by prepping Katy’s damp hair with the OGX Protecting + Silk Blowout Quick Drying Thermal Spray, to protect the strands while adding an extra dose of shine. “Once Katy’s hair was completely dry, I used the GHD Platinum+ Styler to create a soft bend starting at the mid-length of her hair,” he says.

After Guerrero went through and created loose waves, the stylist then went over them with the GHD 1.25-inch curling iron, “starting at the top portion of Katy’s hair to create a more structured pattern with some volume and shape,” he says. Once finished, he spritzed OGX Shine & Revitalize + Argan Oil of Morocco Multi-Benefit Hairspray throughout the waves for hold, then he mixed together the OGX Natural Finish Aspen Texture Dry Texture Finishing Spray and Purifying + Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo. “This combination of products created the most perfect finishing texture for the look,” he says.

Meanwhile, for makeup, Anthony wanted to nod to the eye makeup he and Perry have been experimenting with for her new Las Vegas residency. “I wanted to keep on theme with Katy’s trippy mushroom world that was imported from her Las Vegas show, Play, so I created a matte, carved eye,” says Anthony. To achieve the look, Anthony used one of his most beloved beauty brands. “So many of my tried and true staples are MAC products,” says Anthony. “I used Powder Kiss Soft Matte Eyeshadows from MAC in shades ‘Best of Me,’ ‘What Clout!,’ and the shade ‘Give a Glam’ to define the lash line.”To create separate, full lashes, Anthony also used two coats of MAC’s Extended Play Gigablack Lash Mascara on the top and bottom lashes. On her lips, the artist also used the nude “Boldly Bare” liner, and a peachy-nude matte lipstick in the shade “Down to an Art.” “One of my favorite things about working with Katy is our continuously evolving beauty routine,” says Anthony of the final look. “Over time, we have grown together and have learned to trust each other’s instincts.”
