Kim Kardashian Is Socially Liberal and Fiscally Conservative

Former New York Times Opinion writer turned unaccredited-university cofounder Bari Weiss had Kim Kardashian on the old podcast this week, where she asked the reality star for the identity of her favorite Saturday Night Live cast member. “What a setup. What a setup, Bari,” said Kardashian, who has been making the tabloid rounds with Pete Davidson lately. “You know who it is.”

That was, it turned out, just a warm-up in the evasive olympiad. Elsewhere in the rapid fire round at the end of the pod—which, to its own self-aware credit, asserts in its promotional material that “the most interesting conversations in American life now happen in private”—Weiss asked Kardashian if she is a feminist. She doesn’t like titles but believes in “fighting for what’s right.” And while Kardashian doesn’t call herself a Democrat or Republican, she believes “in the rights that the Democrats want” and “in the taxes that the Republicans want.” That’s right, she’s socially liberal and fiscally conservative, just like you were in high school, only she has a billion bucks.

Kardashian was much more expansive earlier in the podcast when discussing her estranged husband, social media, and cancel culture. She mentioned that she and Weiss had been at a number of “cancel culture dinners” where people were “discussing their thoughts on it.” Frankly, the idea of hearing anything discussed at said dinners makes me want to pull my eardrums out, but I would love to know what was on the menu.

Regarding Kanye West’s 2018 appearance on Saturday Night Live, during which he wanted to wear a MAGA hat, she admitted that she “didn’t want him to wear the red hat on SNL.” Though she generally tries to remain neutral, in this case, she forcefully argued with him: “It taught me to be a little bit more empathetic for people that just want to do what they want to do and, like, freedom of speech, and if you want to wear the hat, wear the hat.” She also respects that he knows what he believes in, saying that people standing up for what they believe in “no matter the circumstances” is a “cool quality.”

Meanwhile, Davidson was seen this week at a Knicks game sans Kardashian, sitting courtside with two other comedians often asked to comment on politics, Jon Stewart and Chris Rock. While the pair spent at least four quarters of NBA basketball away from each other this week, the news cycle around them continues to churn. Flavor Flav told Entertainment Tonight that he was Kardashian’s “birthday gift” for the Saturday Night Live comedian last month—in that photo of them with the Skims jammies.

“One thing that I could say is Pete Davidson loves himself some Flavor Flav,” Flav said. “Everything he does is, ‘Flavor Flav this, Flavor Flav that, Flavor Flav this, Flavor Flav that.’ So Kim said, ‘Okay, well, for your birthday, you are going to have Flavor Flav.’ So she sent for me and that’s how I ended up there.”
