Kyler Murray’s height sends social media into frenzy; being 5-10 makes all the difference

It was one of those moments in which Twitter is at its best. When breaking news happens and the hot takes, and jokes, are on rapid fire mode.

After weeks and months of speculation of how tall Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray is, the world found out on Thursday when his official measurables were announced at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.

Five-feet-10 and 1/8, 207 pounds, with hands that measured at 9.5 inches are how Murray stacks up.

In comparison, when Russell Wilson was measured at the combine back in 2012 he came in at 5-10 and 5/8, 204 pounds and with a hand size of 10 ¼. And in 2018, Murray’s former teammate at Oklahoma, and the quarterback who won the Heisman the year prior, Baker Mayfield stood 6-0 and 5/8, weighed 215 pounds, and had hands that measured 9 ¼.inches.

Despite having the highest quarterback rating in college football history (95.8) and putting together a season in which he threw for 4,361 yards, 42 touchdowns and only 7 interceptions, with another 1,001 yards coming on the ground with 12 more touchdowns, Murray had plenty of skeptics about his stature coming into this week.

The doubters were quieted on Thursday as Twitter had a field day with the fact that a single inch seemed to make all the difference for a prospect that put together one of the greatest seasons for a quarterback in college football history.

“Listed at 5’10” by @OU_Football, @TheKylerMurray had 5 passes batted down last season per @PFF. That’s tied for the fewest among the 4 QB in @MoveTheSticks top 50 prospects. The other 3 are all listed at 6’3″ or taller,” tweeted NFL Research with a graphic that proved that Murray’s height hasn’t been an issue so far in his career.

“A surge through Indianapolis as Kyler Murray checks in a shade above 5-10. Millennia from now they’ll study rocks in the Midwest and date our time as pre- and post-Kyler measurements,” posted Sports Illustrated’s Jonathan Jones.

“Kyler Murray would have been a lineman on the first All-America team,” tweeted staff editor Matt Brown from The Athletic, along with a photo that showed a picture listing the weights and heights of the first college football all-American team in 1889.

“The Combine measurements are in for Kyler Murray, who checks in at 5’10 1/8″, 207 pounds and a 9 1/2″ hand size. Only two quarterbacks since 2006 have been drafted with a Combine height under 6 feet: Russell Wilson in 2012 (3rd round) and Johnny Manziel in 2014 (1st round),” posted the ESPN Stats & Info account.

“When NFL scouts thought Kyler Murray was 5’9″ vs when he measured 5’10” today,” tweeted @apenbrink.

“As a 5-9 man, the obsession over Kyler Murray being 5-9 or 5-10 has been extremely hurtful,” posted @jaycaspiankang.

“Last year, Baker Mayfield was too short & Orlando Brown couldn’t play after his combine performance. This year, we’ll hear Kyler Murray is too small & Jonah Williams’ arms are too short. Somewhere along the way too many forget about one crucial element: Can they play? YES!!!,” tweeted @brentsobleski.

“Kyler Murray and I have almost the exact same height and weight. Clearly I too can be drafted in the first round of the NFL and MLB,” posted @CharlieFreyre.

“where were you when you found out kyler murray was a fraction of an inch taller than some expected,” tweeted ESPN’s Mina Kimes.
