Oakland Athletics | A’s Heisman winner Kyler Murray sorry for anti-gay tweets

Oakland Athletics | A’s Heisman winner Kyler Murray sorry for anti-gay tweets

Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray’s celebration after winning the Heisman Trophy was interrupted after some of his old, anti-gay tweets surfaced Saturday night.

The 21-year-old Murray, who was also the A’s first-round pick and is scheduled to join the team in spring training, apologized for the offensive tweets sent when he was 14 or 15 years old.

“I was young, (but) I own every single part of it,” Murray said on CBS’ “The NFL Today” show. “I used a poor choice of words. … I learned from it. It’s crucial to me that I move on from it at the same time own up to what I said, and move on and learn from it.”

I apologize for the tweets that have come to light tonight from when I was 14 and 15. I used a poor choice of word that doesn’t reflect who I am or what I believe. I did not intend to single out any individual or group.

The A’s didn’t immediately respond Sunday to a request for comment on Murray’s offensive tweets.

Murray joins Brewers pitcher Josh Hader and Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen as athletes whose old, offensive tweets have been brought to light. Hader had produced racist and homophobic tweets, while Allen also tweeted racist remarks as a teenager.

Murray, who led Oklahoma to a Big 12 title and a berth in the College Football Playoff, beat out Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to join Baker Mayfield as back-to-back Sooners quarterbacks to win the Heisman.

The discovery of old tweets wasn’t the only bit of controversy surrounding Murray this week. Although he signed a $4.66 million bonus with the A’s, and his agent Scott Boras insists he’ll stick with the A’s, Murray hasn’t exactly squashed the idea of continuing his football career.

Murray has said the plan “as of now” is to leave football behind to concentrate on baseball, but …

When prodded Sunday on The NFL Today show, Murray again wouldn’t exactly commit 100 percent to baseball.

“You’re trying to put me on the spot right now,” Murray said with a laugh, when asked if he is thinking about playing in the NFL. “To be honest, I’m just focused on the College Football Playoff right now.

“I’m trying to focus on the now … we’ll get to that down the line.”

Boras, though, told Ian Rapoport there’s no debate to be had — Murray will play for the A’s.

“Kyler has agreed and the A’s agreed to a baseball contract that gave him permission to play college football through the end of the collegiate season,” Boras told the NFL Network reporter. “After that, he is under contract to play baseball. That is not a determination to make. It’s already done.”

Thus, Murray’s next football game could be his final one. The fourth-ranked Sooners are taking on No. 1-ranked Alabama on Dec. 29 in one of the two college playoff semifinal games.

However, if Oklahoma beats the Crimson Tide then Murray would come to the Bay Area to play football in the national championship game at Levi’s Stadium on Jan. 7.
