Baseball, softball teams well into their seasons – American Press | American Press

In this edition of the Three Point Stance, staff writers Rodrick Anderson and Warren Arceneaux discuss the first month of play in baseball and softball.

Which baseball team has had the most impressive start?

WA: South Beauregard. The Golden Knights won the Class 3A state title last year with a star-studded senior class. This year’s team has shown no signs of regression, starting the season 13-1. Pitching has been a strong suit with six shutouts and three games with an opponent scoring more than four runs.

RA: Sam Houston. The Broncos are off to a 14-0 start and hold the top-ranking in the most recent Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 5A power rankings. The Broncos have put up big numbers with nine games with at least eight runs while the pitching staff has held team to two or fewer runs in 10 games. Braden Duhon had been the leader at the plate, hitting .460 with 18 runs, 10 RBIs and 19 stolen bases while Marcus Mott has been solid as the top relief pitcher with four saves, a win and a 1.80 ERA.

Which softball team has been most impressive?

WA: Sam Houston. The Broncos have only lost twice and are in control of the District 3-5A race with wins over Sulphur and Barbe. Jenny Griggers has been dominant in the circle while Maddie Pourciaux and Jordan Lafosse lead the offense.

RA: Kinder. After starting the season 1-2, the Yellow Jackets have reeled off 10 consecutive wins and are ranked second in the Class 2A power rankings. Kinder returned several players from last year’s quarterfinal team, including seniors pitcher Sarah Gartman and junior shortstop Kate Trahan.

Which players have stood out?

WA: I’ll take a pair of two-way contributors in Westlake’s Myka Lester in softball and LaGrange’s Colton Frank in baseball. Both are excellent pitchers who can also do damage at the plate. Lester has led the Rams to the District 4-3A lead while Frank beat perennial power Lafayette in the Gators’ district opener on Tuesday.

RA: Watch out for Sulphur’s Chance Stone and Kinder’s Kate Trahan. Stone has been the anchor of the pitching staff which has the team ranked third in the latest Class 5A power rankings. He has pitched 29 2/3 innings and has a 5-0 record with a 1.42 ERA and 36 strikeouts to just four walks. Trahan has been one Kinder’s hottest hitter lately, including a 2-for-3 performance with three RBIs and a double against Ville Platte on Tuesday.
