Jennifer Lawrence had to speak out on affair rumours with Liam Hemsworth this week, after fans theorised Miley Cyrus’ music video Flowers had a hidden meaning.
The song has made headlines for its references to Miley’s ex-husband Liam, 33, including lyrics about the Miami wildfire that destroyed their home.
In the music video, fans noticed the Saint Laurent slinky gold dress from 1991 which Miley, 30, wore to strut around Hollywood bore a striking resemblance to one Jennifer, 32, had hit the red carpet in years earlier.
Eagle-eyed viewers pointed out her dress resembled the gold Prabal Gurung gown worn by Jennifer when she attended The Hunger Games premiere with Liam in Los Angeles on March 12, 2012.
The similarity between the two outfits went viral in a TikTok titled ‘Tell us Miley! Queen of Shade’ that showed side-by-side footage of Miley in the Flowers video and Jennifer on the red carpet.
While Miley has never called out Jennifer publicly, some fans believed she was ‘throwing shade’ at the American Hustle star because she and Liam were rumoured to have had a fling on set of The Hunger Games.
Jennifer and Liam filmed the four-part sci-fi franchise between 2012 and 2015, playing on-screen lovers Katniss Everdeen and Gale Hawthorne.
The pair were the subject of persistent romance rumours throughout filming, and in 2015 Jennifer finally admitted she’d kissed Liam off-camera.
The actress had to finally address the rumours after fan speculation mounted following Miley’s cryptic video.
Andy asked her about it during a game of Plead The Fifth because he said when Miley’s song Flowers came out there was a lot of talk that the music video was referencing a secret fling that she had with Liam while he was with Miley.
‘Not true,’ Jennifer said. ‘Total rumour. We all know we only kissed one time and it was years after they broke up so I just assumed that was a coincidence.’
‘Liam and I grew up together. Liam’s real hot. What would you have done?,’ Jennifer said laughing.
Jennifer admitted when she sees rumours about her on the Internet she gets tempted to send out a tweet but doesn’t maintain her own Twitter or Instagram.
‘If five people at a party think you slept with somebody’s boyfriend it’s really upsetting,’ Jennifer said. ‘And then you multiply it by, I’m not good at the math, eight billion.’
The video Flowers sparked a number of theories.
The gown was part of Saint Laurent’s collection in 1991, which happens to be the year between Miley and Liam’s births: she was born in November 1992 and he was born in January 1990.
Moments after wearing the Saint Laurent dress, Miley slipped into a black blazer by the same designer’s 2022 collection.
Some believe this symbolises how Miley has moved on from the relationship she started as a teenager and is ready for a new era.
During their time together, the couple often wore Saint Laurent, including at the Vanity Fair Oscar party in February 2019 when Liam infamously scolded Miley as she started twerking on the red carpet.
Elsewhere in the video, Miley sings that they ‘built a home and watched it burn’, likely referencing her and Liam’s $2.5million home that burned in the 2018 California fires.
She also alludes to the Australian actor’s sudden act of filing for divorce in 2019 by singing, ‘I didn’t want to leave you / I didn’t wanna lie / Started to cry.’
At the time, it was believed Miley hoped to work on their 10-year on-again/off-again relationship and was shocked Liam wanted to legally end things.
