Giants news, 1/14: What will Kyler Murray decide about NFL Draft?

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

Today is not only Monday, the start of your work week, it is Kyler Murray Decision Day. The Oklahoma quarterback and Oakland A’s outfielder has to announce on Monday whether or not he will enter the 2019 NFL Draft.

The Giants, of course, hold the No. 6 overall pick and whether or not they would select Murray his entrance/non-entrance into the draft could have an impact on who is available to the Giants when their turn to pick arrives. There is tremendous debate in the scouting community over how early Murray, smaller than a traditional quarterback, should be selected in the draft. Some believe he is a top 10 pick, others aren’t even sold on him as a first-rounder.

The A’s could complicate Murray’s decision as they have been given permission by Major League Baseball to offer Murray a major league contract. Murray has already signed a minor-league deal with Oakland and MLB rules prohibit drafted players from immediately signing major-league deals. The rules also prohibit teams from giving players minor league contract and then immediately upgrading those to major league contracts, which would place players on the team’s 40-man big-league roster.

ESPN adds:

In Murray’s case, because he signed a minor league deal, and because his performance at Oklahoma changed the circumstances of his baseball career, Oakland would be within the rules to give Murray a long-term extension if that’s what it takes to keep him in baseball, sources tell ESPN. Even with a major league deal, Murray would likely begin his career at High-A Stockton, sources told ESPN.

Ex-Giants first-rounder Eli Apple is thriving with Saints | New York Post

The ex-Giant is “super happy” to be with the New Orleans Saints, one victory away from playing in the Super Bowl.

The Post writes:

Apple was young and very immature when he arrived at the Giants’ doorstep, not ready to work in a locker room filled with grown men. He needed a change. The Giants could have sent him anywhere in the league. They sent him to the most nurturing environment Apple could have hoped for, and it does not hurt that the Saints most often rack up points and give their defense plenty of cushion. With the Giants, that cushion was often as thin and uncomfortable as a 20-year old sofa.

This feels like a new home for Apple.

“Yeah, I feel I’ve really been playing my best ball as of late,’’ he said. “I think they sky’s the limit.

“It’s just a blessing to be here, a lot of friends and people I know. Ain’t nothing like playing with your brothers and people you came up with and grinded with for so long, like in college. Coming over here and feeling the family love I felt here from Day 1, it was amazing.’’

I don’t know about you, but when it comes to judging top draft picks I love looking at games where two of them go one-on-one. Both Ferrell and Williams could be in play for the Giants, so this is a must-watch.
