Patrick Mahomes has an incredible postseason record as the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, but it does not come without one major issue.

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are two wins away from getting back to the Super Bowl for the third year in a row.

Since taking over the reins of Andy Reid’s offense full-time in 2018, the Chiefs have been an absolute juggernaut over in the AFC. They have made the AFC playoffs every year Mahomes has been their starter, reaching the Super Bowl the last two seasons and winning it all in 2019 over Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers. So what is Mahomes’ overall postseason record?

Mahomes has a stellar 7-2 playoff record in nine starts, but both of his losses have come against teams led by Tom Brady.

Patrick Mahomes has an outstanding playoff record, but cannot beat Tom Brady

Mahomes essentially ended Andrew Luck’s career by beating the Indianapolis Colts in his first playoff game in the 2018 AFC Divisional round. Unfortunately, Kansas City was no match for Brady and the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game, losing in overtime. The Patriots went on to beat the Los Angeles Rams in Super Bowl 53. This was Brady’s last Lombardi in Foxborough, but not his last overall.

With the bitter taste of defeat ever lingering, the 2019 Chiefs were an absolute buzzsaw. They went on to win their first Super Bowl in 50 years, beating the Houston Texans in the divisional round, the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Championship and the 49ers in Super Bowl 54. This brought Mahomes’ playoff record from 1-1 after his first year as a starter to 4-1 after year two.

Kansas City again had the No. 1 seed in the AFC. The Chiefs outlasted the Cleveland Browns in the divisional round before outclassing the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game. Waiting for Kansas City in Super Bowl 55 was the hometown Tampa Bay Buccaneers, quarterbacked by none other than Brady himself. Tampa Bay had no trouble with the Chiefs in that one.

So Mahomes has a 6-2 playoff record after the 2020 postseason heading into this year. While the Chiefs did not have the No. 1 seed in the AFC, they still beat the Pittsburgh Steelers on Super Wild Card Weekend. Entering Sunday’s game vs. the Buffalo Bills, Mahomes has a 7-2 mark heading into the divisional round game.

Mahomes can get to an unbeliever 10-2 mark if the Chiefs win the Super Bowl, and perhaps get his first postseason win against Brady in the process.

Until proven otherwise, the only team that can beat Mahomes in the postseason is the one that employs Brady.
