A poor woman in the northern province of Phu Tho is seeking community support to save her son who needs a bone marrow transplant. Nguyen Thi Nga from Phu Ninh District’s Phu Nham Commune is taking care of her eight-year-old son Duong Phuc Khang who is struggling with innate acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

Nga said that just three days after being born, Khang suffered from high fevers and was diagnosed with pneumonia. He was then taken to different hospitals in Hanoi, including the Vietnam National Hospital of Paediatrics and the National and the Vietnam Ear, Mouth and Throat Hospital for some other diseases. At the age of three, following long fevers, he was diagnosed with the acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Since then, the boy often has had to stay at hospital, sometimes for two to three months at a time. Over the past eight years, the couple has borrowed money from different sources to pay for their son’s treatment. Their debt has risen to over VND200 million. Khang’s father Duong Ba Khiem does different jobs to support the family. Meanwhile, his mother works for a restaurant near the Vietnam National Hospital of Paediatrics where he is being treated to earn some modest money. According to doctors, the only way to save Khang is a marrow transplant, but it would cost VND1 billion (USD41,203). The couple are powerless.Duong Cong Cach, head of Village 4 in Phu Nham Commune, said that Khang’s family is among the poorest in the locality. He hoped that donors could jointly assist them.
