Super Bowl 2023 halftime show prop bets: Rihanna’s first song, outfit color and guest appearances

After last year’s multi-performer showcase, Rihanna takes center stage as the main act for this year’s Super Bowl in Arizona. Rihanna is one of the best-selling artists of all-time, ranking second among female artists behind only Madonna.

The Barbadian gave birth to her first child less than nine months ago so she hasn’t been touring as much in recent years, which will add to the excitement of this show. As always with Super Bowl halftime shows, there are plenty of prop bets you can make, or at the least you will likely see something related to the halftime show on a party prop sheet.

First song

Usually taking a look at recent shows will give a decent clue as to what songs are likely to be played first. Rihanna’s lack of recent concerts make this a bit more unknown, but one of her biggest hits is still likely to start the show. Her last tour was in 2016 to go along with the album “Anti” that came out that year.

“Stay” was the opening track for much of that tour, but at a show in Wembley this past November, “Woo” led off the show. “Stay” may be more likely for a wider audience like the Super Bowl because it’s a well-known single. However, while “Stay” is a good mellow vibe starter for a typical concert, Super Bowl shows tend to be more up-tempo. “Stay” is viewed as more of a longshot.

Could we see “Lift Me Up”? That song was Rihanna’s first single in nearly five years and appeared on the “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” soundtrack. It serves as a tribute to Chadwick Boseman, which may fit in the show, but, again, may not fit the vibe of an opening song.

“Don’t Stop the Music” is the favorite, which makes sense as a big hit that will get the crowd moving right away.

First outfit color

Rihanna’s first outfit color is a tough one because she’s been active professionally in fashion for several years. Her Savage X Fenty brand has an entire line dedicated to the Super Bowl (both with and without the official NFL license). Her outfit won’t be something basic and Rihanna isn’t shy about wearing bright colors, although black is the betting favorite and white is always high in any odds for outfit color.

Potential guests

There are no confirmed guests for the halftime show yet, but there’s usually at least one cameo or duet song and there are some logical choices. There are three names that pop up consistently if you look around: Jay-Z, ASAP Rocky and Drake.

Jay-Z’s entertainment company Roc Nation is producing the show so his name always pops up for a potential appearance. ASAP Rocky is in a relationship with Rihanna and the couple had a son last May. Drake and Rihanna were in a relationship years ago and have collaborated before. All three have featured on Rihanna tracks in the past with Jay-Z featuring on “Umbrella” which seems very likely to be on the halftime show set list in some form.

Number of songs

The over/under for the number of songs played is at 9.5. Halftime at the Super Bowl is longer than normal games, but it takes time to set up the stage and prep the field for use for the teams to return to the field. The halftime show itself typically runs from 12-15 minutes.

That’s a lot of songs to cram into that time frame, but full songs are rarely played. Usually there are remixed or shortened versions to keep things moving. For example, “Umbrella” has a fair amount of repetition that would likely be cut out for the halftime show.

Other prop bets

There are always weird bets you can make on the halftime show. Last year betting on whether Snoop Dogg would smoke something on stage was popular. With just one confirmed artist this year, there are fewer fun, silly props to work with.

“Will Rihanna use an umbrella on stage?” is a common one. If “Umbrella” is a virtual lock to be played during the show, a prop umbrella makes sense. You can usually bet on a wardrobe malfunction, although we haven’t seen anything like that since Janet Jackson.

Rihanna said she is working on new music. Could she play a new song for the Super Bowl halftime show? This doesn’t seem like the venue for that, especially with the limited time.
