For years, running back has been a glory position in Madden. With more emphasis on star players in Madden 20, that could go to the next level in the new game. EA has already revealed the four players who received a 99-overall rating, and none of them are running backs. However, that doesn’t mean there are no game-changers at the position throughout the league.

Here is a look at the 10-best backs in Madden 20.

  1. Todd Gurley – 97 – Los Angeles Rams
  2. Ezekiel Elliott – 94 – Dallas Cowboys
  3. Le’Veon Bell – 92 – NY Jets
  4. Melvin Gordon III – 92 – Los Angeles Chargers
  5. Saquon Barkley – 91 – NY Giants
  6. Christian McCaffrey – 91- Carolina Panthers
  7. Kareem Hunt – 90 – Cleveland Browns
  8. Alvin Kamara – 90 – New Orleans Saints
  9. Devonta Freeman – 89 – Atlanta Falcons
  10. Joe Mixon – 88 – Cincinnati Bengals

The three-point gap between Gurley and Elliott is huge when you consider what goes into an overall rating. While the disparity is noticeable, depending on the style of offense you like to run, you might still prefer controlling Elliott. The Cowboys’ star has higher ratings in every receiver-related category. In Madden 20, Elliott has better hands than Gurley for catching while open, and in traffic. He also has a higher rating for spectacular catches, gaining a release from a defender on passing plays, and is a more crisp runner.

The more you scan the ratings, the more you wonder about the formula that generates the overall marks. Gurley’s advantages over Elliott are a +2 in speed, +1 in acceleration, a +7 in elusiveness, +1 in ball-carrier vision, a +6 in breaking tackles and a +6 in carrying. Essentially, Gurley is viewed as the better pure runner, but you could argue Elliott is a more complete back. If you throw the ball to your running back regularly, but you still want to pound it inside, Elliott should probably be your top target in a fantasy draft, and in Ultimate Team.

Fantasy Football: Can Todd Gurley Repeat His 2017 Dominance?

Despite missing all of last season, Bell maintained a choice spot in the Top 10 running back list. His 75 catch rating is the seventh highest in the game among running backs. Though he only has an 89-speed rating, Bell is still a threat as a traditional ball carrier. While Elliott is an excellent dual-threat, the most dangerous receiving back in the game has to be McCaffrey. His 91-speed rating is the second-highest for running backs, and his 81 catch rating is the highest at his position.

If you’re running a dual-back offense, the best team might be the Cleveland Browns. The Browns are the only team with two running backs rated in the Top 20. Hunt is the seventh highest- rated running back with a 90 overall rating. His teammate Nick Chubb checks in with a very respectable 85 overall. If Hunt is injured, or simply needs to be checked out for a play or two, the Browns have the best backup in Madden 20.

Chubb’s power running style makes him a threat. He boasts a 90 breaking tackles rating. As good as that is, Chubb is not the toughest back to tackle in Madden 20. That distinction belongs to Barkley. Heading into his second season, Barkley has a game-high 97 breaking tackles rating followed by Gurley’s 96. Understanding the player ratings is an important aspect of team building in Madden whether you’re playing franchise or MUT.
