Set to enter his third season as the starting quarterback for the Miami Hurricanes, can Tyler Van Dyke deliver on his upside as a potential early-round QB prospect? Here’s a look at his 2024 NFL Draft scouting report and where he still has room for improvement on the draft circuit.

A four-star recruit out of high school, Van Dyke exploded onto the college football stage with a standout redshirt freshman campaign in 2021. That year, Van Dyke completed 202 of 324 attempts for 2,931 yards, 25 touchdowns, and just six interceptions.

The arrival of Mario Cristobal from Oregon in 2022 fueled added excitement for the Hurricanes’ program, along with Van Dyke. But instead, Miami took a step down in 2022. They went 5-7, falling out of bowl contention. And Van Dyke’s average yards per attempt dropped almost two full yards, as he passed for 10 scores and five picks on 253 attempts.

Heading into his redshirt sophomore season, Van Dyke had some fringe first-round hype, but now, his 2024 NFL Draft stock is in limbo. Does the Hurricanes’ team leader have the traits to re-emerge in 2023? Let’s take a look.

• Extremely elastic arm allows for free-functioning angle manipulation at release.
• Has decent vertical speed in open field and has enough mobility to sidestep rushers.
• Arm elasticity enables him to both work off-platform and elongate throwing windows.
• Flashes the ability to keep his eyes up while rolling out, creating chances off-script.

Current Draft Projection and Summary

Entering the 2024 NFL Draft cycle, Van Dyke is a Day 3 QB prospect at best. He does have the necessary arm talent to potentially rise into early-round contention with enough development. But after a year of developmental stagnation and statistical regression in 2022, he needs to rebound in a big way to resurrect his stock.

At 6’4″, 230 pounds, with high-level arm strength and arm elasticity, Van Dyke is a passer in the young “Big Ben” Roethlisberger mold — purely from a physical standpoint.

He’s not an active, creative, or athletic force in his offense, but he does have enough mobility to work off-platform, and he’s a tough, strong pocket passer who can peel passes around tight coverage with his velocity.

Right now, those are where the similarities end between Van Dyke and the former NFL standout. Much of Van Dyke’s production in 2021 was unsustainably inflated by his scheme, and in 2022, he experienced a regression.

Inconsistencies with processing, field vision, mechanics, and accuracy all remained in 2022, and an injury suffered late in the season against Duke prevented him from riding out the year on a high note.

Nevertheless, strong showings against North Carolina and Virginia Tech provided some solace for Van Dyke, and he could build on those outings in 2023.

As a pocket passer without elite creation capacity, the margin for error is slimmer for Van Dyke, which is why he needs major work on the operational side. But with another year as a starter in a system that offers more support, he could potentially fight for Day 2 capital as a developmental backup with starting upside at his ultimate maximum.
