Stephania Bell’s perspective

Saquon Barkley originally injured his right ankle late in the Week 2. Thankfully for Barkley his ankle – despite being swollen and causing him to limp in the immediate aftermath of the game – began to improve quickly, hinting at a potentially shorter absence. While the mechanism of injury appeared to be consistent with a high ankle sprain, early reporting from ESPN’S Adam Schefter cited a source as labeling it an “ordinary sprain” but still one likely to result in an approximate three-week absence. (One reason it may not immediately have been labeled a high ankle sprain is that there may have been no obvious structural damage on x-ray (such as widening of the ankle joint) or MRI (specific ligamentous tearing) consistent with that particular injury.) While language and intent are impossible to determine from a distance, there was enough trauma present to sideline Barkley for an unspecified time. He was never likely to play in Week 3, a Thursday night game just four days after the initial injury but Barkley did say during that pregame interview that he was, in fact, dealing with a high ankle sprain. He also went on to say it wasn’t nearly as bad as it could have been. So it was not surprising that he appeared in the team’s first practice session this week (Thursday) where coach Brian Daboll said he could watch how Barkley was moving. He was ultimately listed as a limited participant daily but never progressed much beyond individual drills. On Saturday, the team listed him as doubtful on their pregame status report. Barkley told reporters he’s doing better than what people (including the doctors he’s spoken with) would expect but called the process frustrating. “I’m healing fast, but you want it to be faster…” In the meantime, he says he’ll continue to take it day by day as he works his way back. For what it’s worth, Barkley suffered a right high ankle sprain in Week 3 of 2019. He missed three games and returned in Week 7 to post 18 carries for 72 yards and a touchdown along with three catches for eight yards. Despite his strong performance in his return, Barkley struggled intermittently for several weeks afterward and didn’t return to form until later in the season. In the postseason he acknowledged in retrospect that he felt he returned too soon. Barkley has the benefit of additional experience this season, including injury recovery, undoubtedly helping him to stay the course as he recovers from this latest incident.
